best way to get ride of hair algae?

My old 30 gallon aquarium that has been in my brother's care for the past year is now over run with hair algae and i want to know if there are any more steps i can take to get rid of it.

the tank is still not in my possession, i need to make a bit more money before i can afford to keep again . i put 4 turban snails (1 has died since), 5 hermits (there was only one in there before). and put some grape caulipera? (dont really know how to spell it) and scrubbed all the algae i could get off with a brush and put the rock back in the tank.
when i finally get the tank here im going to try and stave the algae by leaving it without light for a week, but since i have some mushrooms im going to have to wait till i have the tank here and i can put them in the fuge with a light



anything else i should do?

i just made another post before this about turbo snails. i ha d a big problem with hair algea until i got these, all gone now.
there is a bunch of things you can do.
what kind of water are you using will help, more water changes too
take the rock out and leave it in a rubbermaid tub for a week or two. and scrub the hell out of them with brushes..
also depends on how long the algea is some emerald crabs will pick at them and some fish will also..

ya i was waiting for my lfs to get some emeralds in, i'm going to try and get some mollies as well, but seeing as how i only see the tank once a week when im out there for sunday supper can't do much about the water changes

turbo snail worked for me and i still don't see any, anywheres. these guys go anywheres seen them on the powerheads, heaters but they come out at night and don't like the light, well mine dont. if i can i'll look for picts and show you before and now

look closely and you can see the green patches no snails then

i donno, im iffy about turbo snails... i dont want them knocking over my rocks i value the rock scape too much

that is true, they have move a few corals around but nothing too serious and if you get some try not to get what i got..

what kind of turbos did you get?.... im only going to use them as a last resort

i got them from J&L just called turbos, latin name turbo sp.

Get a Sea Hare, they work great(and shouldn't mess with your rockwork). I also have 3 emerald crabs and they also work sweet! Sally lightfoots are also good.

A sea hare is a great algae removing machine but keep in mind they eat themselves out of house and home in a hurry. If you get one you should make sure you have a home to send him to when your tank is clean or be prepared to watch him die.

To my way of thinking running GFO (phosphate remover) and using turbo snails is the way to go. It may take a little longer to cure the problem but why rush to the finish line.

I agree............they do work great though don't they
Most stores will take them back, as there's always someone looking for a good way to get rid of the infamous GHA, so they know that they can just about always re-sell it.

so should i add phosphate remover even if i have some macroalgae
