New to saltwater ANY help would be great!

Post by TiAmosJewell on Fri May 01, 2009 10:57 am

Hi I'm a mother of two kids under 3 yrs and enjoy my pets including the fish. My past is in fresh water fish(tropicals and I've breed bettas) and I know little about the saltwater life, soon though I'll have a 170 gallon tank thats already set-up and running. Yep I'm starting to think I'm nuts!!! We bought a house and the guy is leaving his 170 gallon saltwater tank, we've always want a saltwater tank. My brothers had a 100 gallon saltwater tank before and my hubbys uncle had a large set up to. We thought we'd get a great deal of help but so far not much and we're 2 months away from moving in.

I don't know much about the set-up of the tank other then there's no plants other then coral. The filter is very large and includes two 10 gallon tanks that are under the tank in a cabnit. When we go for our next veiwing I'll be taking lots of pictures. I'd eventually like to add some real plants and change the fish in the tank if there still there(The guy might take the fish) There weren't many in the tank and I'm not sure what they were. There was a large one that looked like a silver dollar and another bight orange one that kind of looked like that blue dizzy fish from Nemo. I was told there was an ell in there but I've never seen it, there was another fish or two too.

I guess until I can get pics of the set-up any advice at all would be GREAT!!! I'm going to the libary to get books and searching the net. Hopefully my brothers life settles down and when we move in he can come take a look and help us out.[code]

I think you have the right idea with a trip to the Library and surfing the net. The best thing you can do right now is to educate yourself about the wonderful world of saltwater aquariums. Read....then read some more...and when you think you've read it all....find another book...lol. Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions.
I would also try and talk to the present owner and find out as much as possible about the set up and all the Equipment that he is using for lighting, filtration, pumps, skimmer, is there a sump, is there a refugium, what is he including or leaving behind for you in the way of supplies and equipment. I would get a specific list of what you actually get in the deal. I just hope you dont show up on move in day to find an empty glass box. Pictures are always good.
