problem with kole tang(black blotches)

Post by 300gallonacrylic on Tue Feb 17, 2009 12:07 pm

Hey all,

Hope someone can help me out with this problem. This morning when my lights came on, I noticed that my kole tang was kinda pale in colour, it also looked like he had a dusting of rust on him. I went to timmies for a coffee run, and on my return, I noticed that now the kole tang is about 50% covered in some kind of black blotches. I have attached a pic. Not sure what it is, or why it's there, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

My initial thought in reading the post was black ich, but see that picture it would have to be the worst case I have ever seen.

I think it may be stress related just because of how quickly it has progressed. The fish went from 100% fine last night, to pale colouring in the morning(looked like he saw a ghost), to covered in black blotches by noon. I can't find anything on the net like it. It kinda reminds me of the colour change the foxface goes through at night.

Ok, it's morning now, and the black blotches are all gone.....he is still very pale in colour though....could he maybe have been stung by the foxface? Or the anemone? That's the only thing I can think of....He was mostly in hiding yesterday, however when I fed the fish last night, around 6-7pm, he did come out and try to eat a bit....and I did notice him picking at the bottom of the tank and some rocks. As for his diet, I feed him Spectrum pellets, spirulina flakes, and daily I switch between red seaweed, green seaweed, and some seaweed I picked up from the oriental section of the grocery store(used to wrap sushi). I'll try to get a pic of him now.

Ok, here's a pic of him from this morning....may not be able to tell, but his colour is still very pale, still has what looks like a rust colour dusting on him. He seems to be swimming weird as well....kinda twitchy and jerky, and he hides alot....he's always been hiding, but now more than ever.

I don't see any injuries to him anywhere, I was debating trying to net him and put him in QT, but I think to catch him, I'd have to pull out ALL the rockwork, and I'm not into that right now, as I've got a pond in my basement right now....my hot water tank sh*t the bed and was leaking all day yesterday while we were out, and my entire basement is in about an inch of water.... Sad
