Frags

I would like to know what exactly frag are?? Are they good for a starter tank?? If so where do i get some and how much do they cost. Also have a question about lava rock. Can they go into a salt tank?? I have a asked a few people and am in a tie with 4 yes and 4 no's

in my 33g tank i first started i had 4 pieces of lava rock. don't think i ever ran into a problem, they had nice size holes too. frags are pieces of coral some one broke or cut off and are selling. price well it depends on who is selling what and how big it is. i'm 50/50 with frags depends on what it is i have a hard time getting it to grow, so sometimes i like to buy them big. if its something easy to grow frags are great. getting different frags gets you an idea of what you like and what you can keep and if something dies then its only a few bucks lost.. hope this works for you and good luck

The info Satellite gave you about frags is correct....Its a matter of whether you would like to grow them out or not..I myself buy most my stuff as frags, that way I can watch them grow into awesome colonies...but being as you have a 100gallon you may want to buy some pieces that are a bit larger..it all comes down to personal preference..

As for the lava rock , I don't know much about it, maybe a few other members will chime in here and give you their 2 cents on it as well...

Hi Shannon, I am located in Mount Forest. Thats about 1 hour north of Guelph. Thanks for the replies all. Will take a chance on the lava rock. My only concern was possible metals in the rock. Did not kow if that would hurt anything in the tank.

Not a big fan of lava rock myself and one of the main reasons is the one you brought up Sirtrout (Gerry).

A 100 gallon reef is not small investment. Does one really want to skimp on rock and risk long term tank viability?

Allow me to add a big NO to the lava rock debate.....they contain all sorts of trace minerals and are not good for a SW tank as well there is no buffering capability to Lava rock so your more likely to have ph problems. If you plan on keeping corals but don't want to spend a fortune on rock get some high quality live rock pieces and stock the rest with base rock and allow the live rock to repopulate the base rock.

oh as for frags I have some and Woodstock isn't too far from Mt Forest. I have zoas, yuma, torch corals, hammer, chalice, turbinara, mushrooms etc....

Shayneh, I would be interested in buying some. Can you send me your address and a good time to come and take a look. All this is new to me and my first attempt at a salt tank. I will leave all my lava right where it is. In a bucket under the stairs lol. Most weekends are free for now anyways. Also thanks to all who replyed. I will learn alot here

Gerry....I am almost always available to talk reef but I have some more advice.......go slow only bad things happen fast. Trust me frags are easy to come by in the London/Woodstock area and range in price from $5-$50. I recommend you get your aquascape together and learn what your system is doing. I also wonder what your setup consists of...let us know what you've got.....

Lava Rock is a 50/50 chance, it may be bad and it may be not. They may leach Iron and
Magnesiums. You dont want to restart your tank after you see that you have abundance of iron and Magnesium. Better off just using live rock, trust me if you be patient you can get cheap live rock at 2.50 a pound or so.
