Hi all, just a quick question regarding BTA and maroon clowns.....I recently picked up a fairly large RBTA, acclimated it to the tank, placed it in, and about a week later, my maroon clowns were living in it.....my question is, I don't know if my maroons are both the same sex, or opposites, but if they are both the same sex, will they both live in the anemone peacefully? I'm asking because, they are both living in it. At night, they're both in it, and during the day, the larger one is usually in it, and the smaller one comes and goes...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Gender : Males are generally smaller, more red and less aggressive than the female. This fish has the ability to change it's sex when the top female dies. A larger male will turn into a female.

Hi, thanks, I know that, it's just that I didn't get the 2 clowns from the same place or at the same time(about 2-3 months apart), and I know it can take as little as a month for a male to turn to a female when it's the only clown in the tank, I guess I could've re-worded my question to better describe what I wanted to know, as obviously if they were both males, one would turn female, so I'm just wondering if 2 females would/could live together in the same anemone? The reason why I want to know, is because my 2 maroons both spend the night in the anemone, and the larger one spends most of it's time during the day in it as well, and the smaller one comes and goes. So would it be safe to assume that 1's a male and the other's a female? Or can 2 females live together in the same anemone?

One more thing to add.....The smaller of the two clowns, quite often shows the submissive signs of turning onto it's side and quivering in front of the larger one, but the smaller one is also much darker than the large one(which kinda contradicts what I've read on the net.....that being the female will usually be a darker more maroon colour).....the larger one was much darker, but now that it's living in the anemone, it seems to have gotten much lighter in colour. I'm confused......should I just buy another much smaller maroon, and add him to the tank to create a matched pair, or should I just wait it out? As for their sizes, the larger one is about 3-1/2" to 4" long, and the smaller one is about 2" to 2-1/2". Any help/info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The shivering is submissive, think of it as kind of a.. "Hi honey I am over here" If you already have 2 maroons, DO NOT get a 3rd maroons are the most agressive of the clown, although the gold stripe is the more agressive of the maroons.. the 3rd one will probably be killed.

Nature is nature you can't change that. the larger maroon is the female and the size is about right for the size difference between the 2 sexes.. let them be.

Also it is normal for the male to be away from the nem during the day and the female to stay at home.
