Post by Slough Shark Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:43 pm

I've decided to make the switch from fresh water to salt. It's a 90 gallon tank and i currently own a Rena x4 canister filter. However, the fish store guy says that I have to switch to a sub tank filter system to ensure a successful tank. The short term will be ok, but in the long run a canister filter will cause all sorts of problems. Not sure if hes just trying to sell me a system or if he's telling the truth.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Derek..

Do you have the room to maybe run a sump under your stand?..I beleive thats the best way to go...hides alot of your equiptment, and makes a tank run alot cleaner..just my 2 cents...

Fish store dude is right (IMO) Most canister filters accumulate nitrates and cause all sorts of problems later on...... My advice is get the tank drilled (coast to coast overflows are best for surface skimming) and plumb in a large sump/refugium (check kajiji for used tanks cheap and then hit your local glass shop for scraps for the bubble traps). Or run a sump refugium above the tank with a gravity return.....HOB overflows suck as they can lose siphon easily and you may find yourself peeing alot with the constant water sounds. You could do a DSB setup without a sump but they require a whole different approach and can be finickity as well all your equipment is hanging off the back of the tank. Best of luck!!!!

Why is that???? Not trying to discourage you but Calgary should have tons of glass places that will drill some holes....Heck even here is a small town like Woodstock there is a glass place that has the right drill and bits.....

You dont have to drill, you could build an overflow box, here's a link

In my opinion don't do the overflow... I have had them and they are a P.I.T.A they collect air and lose siphon (huge overflow potential),and the box on the back amplifies the splashing sound of the water.... drill the tank...even if it costs you $50 per hole (which it shouldn't) it's still worth the peace of mind.....

Agreed, drilling the tank is the way to go. I've done both and would never again go with an overflow box.
