The best reason to go bare bottom is to avoid detritus build-up leading to high nitrates. Bare bottoms are most often seen in coral frag growout tanks.
The down side of a tank with no substrate is that it has a less 'natural' appearance and it will limit your ability to keep certain tank inhabitants happy and healthy such as sifting gobies, some snails and other invertabrates, etc. Beneficial bacterias will also have less area to thrive.

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION THINK I WILL PUT ABOUT AN INCH IN MY NEW TANK AS SOON AS I BUILD A TOP FOR IT FIRST SO GLASS DOESN`T BEND TOO MUCH AS TANK HAS NO TOP SUPPORT JUST THE SEALER HOLDING IT TOGETHER

How large is the tank Harley? May not necessarily need a top. Corner bracing with triangular pieces, or a center brace may do the trick.

I come up with about 44 gallons. My opinion is that glass bowing will not be an issue with this tank given the 14 inch height.
